The stunning Emerald is the May birthstone and the traditional gift for the 55th wedding anniversary. Emeralds are said to ‘give the gift’ of good eyesight and intellect, to cure headaches and sooth fears and irritations. The vibrant green colour also means love, youth, and timelessness.

Emeralds have been prized since ancient Egyptian times with the first emerald mine discovered in 1818 in Northern Egypt. Colombian emeralds are among the world’s most beautiful, with quality emeralds Brazil, India, South Africa, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Russia, and Zimbabwe.

Emeralds are green members of the popular beryl family of minerals and are the most valuable type of beryl. The green colour occurs when pure, clear beryl contains either chromium or vanadium. Beryl occur in other colours too – a blue beryl is known as Aquamarine, a pink beryl is known as Morganite and yellow beryl is known as a Heliodor.
